Types of Appliances
Each appliance plays a vital role in managing different orthodontic challenges, ensuring that each phase of your treatment leads to a successful outcome.
Elastics (Rubber Bands)
These are crucial for enhancing the fit of your upper and lower teeth. They must be worn as directed to be effective, ensuring efficient alignment and bite correction.
Headgear
This appliance corrects overbites and underbites by restraining further growth of the upper jaw and promoting proper jaw alignment.
Although headgear was more common in the past, modern orthodontics offers alternatives that often eliminate the need for its use.
Herbst® Appliance
Aimed at correcting overbites, this appliance encourages forward movement of the lower jaw and backward positioning of the upper molars. It is typically used in younger patients and is worn for about 12-15 months.
Palatal Expander
This device widens your upper jaw by applying pressure to your upper molars at each adjustment session. After achieving the desired expansion, you will wear the expander for several months to stabilize the expansion.
Positioners
These appliances finalize the tooth movements necessary for completing your orthodontic treatment. With full adherence to wearing the positioner, treatment can often be completed within four to eight weeks.
Retainers
Available in removable or fixed forms, retainers maintain the new position of your teeth after the active phase of orthodontic treatment is complete. Proper care and consistent wear are crucial to prevent movement back to their original positions.
Separators or Spacers
These small rubber rings are temporarily inserted between your teeth to create enough space to fit orthodontic bands comfortably at your next appointment. It’s important to avoid sticky foods and dental floss around separators as they can dislodge them.
