Life with Braces
Eating with Braces
Adjusting your diet is essential when wearing braces to prevent damage to your orthodontic appliances. Avoid chewy, crunchy, sticky, and hard foods that can dislodge or break the braces. Instead, opt for softer options like dairy products, soft tortillas, tender meats, and steamed vegetables. While it might seem restrictive at first, you’ll soon be able to enjoy many of your favorite foods again.
Managing Discomfort and Maintenance
It’s common to experience some soreness when you first get your braces. Rinsing with a saltwater solution can help alleviate mouth pain. If discomfort persists, over-the-counter pain relievers may be used. Remember to apply dental wax to any areas of your braces that are causing irritation to the inside of your mouth.
Handling Loose Braces Components and Sports
If a wire or band becomes loose, use the back of a spoon or a pencil eraser to push it back into place temporarily, and cover any sharp ends with wax or a damp cotton ball to prevent irritation.
For those who are active in sports, wearing a mouthguard is crucial to protect both your teeth and braces. Should an accident occur, assess for any damage and contact our office immediately to address any urgent adjustments or repairs.
By taking the right precautions and following these guidelines, you can ensure a smoother, more comfortable experience with braces.
