Emergency Care
Handling Emergencies:
True orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but should you experience significant pain or a malfunctioning appliance that you cannot address, contact our office immediately to arrange a repair. You can temporarily manage some issues by placing wax on protruding parts or moving dislodged wires with tweezers. If a piece becomes loose, save it in a bag or envelope to bring to your appointment.
Soreness and Discomfort:
It’s normal to feel some soreness when braces are first applied; this usually subsides within a few days. Soft foods and rinsing with salt water can ease discomfort. For persistent pain, over-the-counter pain relievers like Acetaminophen can help. However, it’s best to avoid those that can slow tooth movement, such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen.
Adjustment Issues:
If you experience issues like a poking wire, use the eraser end of a pencil to adjust it, or cut it with nail clippers if it cannot be repositioned. Apply wax to cushion any sharp ends. For problems with headgear or other appliances, follow the specific care instructions provided, and contact us if discomfort persists or the appliance is damaged. Always bring any concerns to our attention during your visits.
